What is 'The Troubles'?

The Troubles in Northern Ireland refer to a period of prolonged conflict that was primarily between the Nationalist Catholics who identified as Irish, who sought reunification with the rest of Ireland and the Protestant Unionists, who defiantly vowed to keep Ulster part of the United Kingdom. British Security Forces were deployed in the province in August of 1969 and wouldn’t leave until the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Over 3,000 lives were lost in thirty years of bloody guerrilla warfare and changed the face of Irish and British politics forever.
